Where is 12V required rather than optional?

Under BS 7671, bathroom wet area zones (Zone 0 and Zone 1) require extra-low-voltage fittings, typically 12V. This is not a preference but a regulatory requirement enforced through electrical inspection. Caravan and motorhome installations run on 12V DC battery systems by design, making 12V the only option without an inverter.

Outside these mandatory applications, 12V is specified by choice in architectural lighting, under-cabinet installations, and display lighting where the low voltage allows slimmer, more discreet fittings.

Do I need a driver for 12V bulbs?

If the 12V bulb is being installed on a mains-powered circuit, yes: a driver or transformer is required to convert 230V to 12V. If the bulb is going into a system already running at 12V (caravan battery, solar installation), no driver is needed.
