GU10 or MR16: which spotlight type do I need?

GU10 is a 230V mains-voltage bulb with a twist-lock base. It fits directly into the majority of recessed ceiling downlights in UK homes without a driver or transformer. MR16 is a 12V low-voltage bulb with a bi-pin base, requiring a driver or transformer on the circuit. It is found in older installations and in commercial or architectural fittings specified for low-voltage operation.

Check the existing bulb or the fitting label. If the bulb twists into the fitting, it is GU10. If it pushes in with two pins, it is MR16.

What is dim-to-warm and is it worth the premium?

Dim-to-warm spotlights automatically shift colour temperature as they dim: functional white at full brightness, deeply warm amber at low levels. The transition is smooth and requires nothing beyond a trailing-edge dimmer on the circuit.
